| American Harlequin Corporation (AHC) has found a way to reward students who are passionate about dance and wish to further their training. This reputable company, based in Moorestown New Jersey, is a world leader in the production of high quality dance flooring. In 1999, AHC established this annual scholarship program, with a goal to “provide better opportunities for young people pursing performing arts careers”. Giving away 20 scholarships from $500 to $5,000, this year AHC will be awarding a total of $25,000 to students across the US and Canada. As each nominee has equal opportunity, AHC will be randomly drawing the winners of these scholarships during their December 2006 corporate board meeting. The Center for Dance Education (CDE) encourages any interested students to apply for nomination. Any dancer, age 15-21, who has been enrolled with CDE prior to December 2005 is eligible. CDE will accept nominations through October 27th, 2006. For more information and an application form, please call (803) 771-6303 or email dance@cdestudios.org. |
The Center for Dance Education has always encourages its students to go over and beyond, whether it is by taking advantage of master classes, auditions, or diverse training. Well, now some of our faculty has taken the same philosophy. Mimi Worrell and Aimee Morris will be headed to Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet (CPYB) for the 2006 Teachers’ Workshop from August 13th through August 18th.
This week long workshop takes an in-depth look at the syllabus of Marcia Dale Weary, the founder and artistic director of CPYB. Weary and her caliber of dancers, are world-renowned for their education and training. As such, CPYB and Weary have developed this workshop to bring together teachers from across the nation in an effort to share her methods. Along with discussion of the CPYB syllabus, critique of teaching methods, choreography for young students, pointe work (fit and technique) for the beginning student, as well as daily hands-on sessions, with Weary and her faculty, top this workshops agenda.
As this is the second annual Teachers’ Workshop at CPYB, we are very proud to be sending these two teachers. We hope you will join us in welcoming these teachers back and encourage you to speak with them on their experience.
If you would like more information about this and other programs offered through the Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet please click here. If you would like to find out more about this experience, please email us at dance@cdestudios.org. |

An imaginative adventure by Wendy, John, and Michael, guided by Peter Pan, I Can Fly, took audiences from the Darlings Nursery through the stars to Neverland. Meeting enchanted Island Natives like Mermaids, Crocks with clocks and Indians along the way. The dreaded Captain Hook was of course in full form as accompanied by his trusty sidekick Smee, the Captive Princesses, and his Plank Pirates.
This big adventure was a big hit on stage as our five shows held over Saturday, May 20th and Sunday, May 21st left audiences clapping and cheering loudly for the cast and all dancers participating. I Can Fly was an overall success, as seen by all the smiles from the dancers and parents concluding each show. CDE wants to thank all the volunteers who helped to make these Peter Pan shows a pleasant adventure. We also want to commend all the pre-professional dancers who took advantage of our extended curriculum of running a performance. These dancers learned the many parts of how each of these shows is run such as stage managing, lighting, sound, backstage managing, lobby, tickets and programs. They did a great job with bringing this show to life.
One weekend before I Can Fly our pre-professional dancers were able to take the stage, in Encore!, and give our younger dancers the opportunity of being audience members. We would like to thank all our young dancers who came out to the show. They were entertained by many different pieces from multiple techniques, such as classical ballet, modern, jazz, and contemporary dance. This engaging concert was concluded with our traditional awards ceremony and acknowledgment of our graduating seniors, Micah Mallory, Aimee Morris, Lauren Shankle, and Anna Varn. As this concert season has come to an end, we still say “the show must go on”. We hope to see you all over the summer and again next year.
If you would like to request a video ($22 each) from any of our six concerts, please email us at dance@cdestudios.org, subject line “Video Order”, and we will send you an order form. As always, if you have any comments or suggestions on your experience or how we can improve our concert, please let us know via email at dance@cdestudios.org.
